Cinnamon-Thyme Tea

This is one of my favorite go-to natural remedies.  I love it!  I don’t get sick that often, but when I do, this tea is a must.  It’s important to start drinking this tea as soon as you start to feel a little off.  It will help speed up the healing process as it strengthens your immune system.

Cinnamon is known for it’s warming effect, which is really beneficial when you are sick.  It’s sweet and spicy, adds a wonderful flavor and it aids in digestion too.

Thyme is an amazing herb.  Most people think of it as a culinary herb, but it has medicinal properties too.  It’s naturally antimicrobial, helps strengthen the immune system and it helps prevent recurrent infections.

Looking for other natural remedies for colds and flu?  Check out my other favorites: Hot Garlic-Ginger Lemonade, Elderberry & Rose Hip Syrup & Master Tonic

Slippery Elm “Candies” for Coughs

Slippery Elm is wonderful for pesky coughs.  It helps soothe irritations, moisten dry throats and calm coughs.  When paired with raw honey (which is naturally antibacterial, antiseptic and antifungal) it provides a wonderful natural remedy for coughs.

Slippery Elm “Candies”
These are so easy to make.  Make sure to always have some slippery elm powder on hand.

{Affiliate links included help support this blog}

Equipment: Small bowl

  • ¼ cup slippery elm powder (buy slippery elm powder here)
  • 3 tablespoons raw honey (I use local raw clover creamed)
  • 3 tablespoons raw cacao powder or carob powder
  • ½ - 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon gluten free organic vanilla extract (I use Simply Organic)

1.    In a small bowl, add all ingredients.  With clean hands, mix to combine until it forms a dough.

2.   Break off small pieces of dough (about ½ - 1 teaspoon) and roll into little balls.  You can also roll dough into a thin “snake” and break off small pieces to roll into balls.

3.    Place in a bowl and leave out on the counter covered.  They will start to dry out a little becoming more like a lozenge.  They can be consumed right away as is or when they have dried.

Yield: Makes about 40 mini "candies."

Dosage: Suck on these “candies” as often as needed.  Safe for children too (not babies due to the raw honey).

Note: If you do not care for cacao or carob, omit and replace with extra slippery elm powder.

Master Tonic

This post is inspired by Pat @ Heal Thyself! who shares such fabulous information.  Her Master Tonic 101 post is loaded with great info, make sure to head over and check out her site.

Master Tonic is known as being the CURE ALL.  It’s known for curing all kinds of ailments, viruses and illnesses.  It is also a wonderful preventative since it has amazing immune system boosting properties.

The stars of this Master Tonic tincture:

  • Garlic – Naturally antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antimicrobial, great for upper respiratory issues.
  • Ginger – Naturally antimicrobial, boosts the immune system, great for upset tummy, chills, colds and fevers (use w/ caution if pregnant, consult w/ your health care practitioner, omit if you are concerned).
  • Horseradish – Naturally antibacterial, natural antibiotic, has warming properties, stimulates the immune system, antiparasitic, expectorant.
  • Hot Peppers – Warming properties, helps boost the immune system, natural decongestant, natural pain-reliever.
  • Lemon Grass – Naturally antibacterial, antifungal, helps reduce fever, helps boost the immune system, helps detoxify many parts of the body including the kidneys.
  • Organic Unfiltered Raw Apple Cider Vinegar – Natural antiseptic and antifungal, very healing.

Make this Master Tonic on the New Moon and strain on the Full Moon.  It’s not absolutely necessary, however the moon is a very powerful thing.  The moon controls ocean tides, the way our plants grow and even affects mood and behavior in animals and people.  So why not add some extra power and intention to the Master Tonic by making it on the New Moon?  Any kind of extra positive intention is fabulous in my opinion.  To learn more about the moon and for moon updates, check out The Power Path Moon Updates

Master Tonic
THE Cure All, make sure to have a batch of this always on hand.

Equipment: Disposable Gloves, Food Processor (optional), Grater, Cutting Board, Good Quality Knife, Large Bowl, Large Glass Jars with Lids, Cheesecloth or Fine Mesh Strainer

  • 1 part fresh garlic cloves, chopped
  • 1 part fresh ginger root, peeled and grated
  • 1 part fresh horseradish, peeled and grated
  • 1 part fresh HOT peppers, chopped (use a variety of the hottest peppers you can find like Habeneros, Jalepenos, Serranos, etc.)
  • ¼ part fresh lemon grass, chopped
  • Raw organic unfiltered apple cider vinegar (I use this)

1.     Wash and prep garlic, ginger, horseradish, peppers and lemon grass.

2.    If using a food processor, use the grater blade to grate the horseradish and ginger.  Remove contents and set aside in large bowl.  Remove grater blade in food processor and replace with “S-shape” blade.   Place peppers and garlic in the food processor and pulse until contents are coarsely chopped, add to large bowl.  If you are hand chopping the peppers, make sure to wear gloves (make sure NOT to rub your eyes as the oils are very potent and will burn).  Chop lemon grass into ½ in chunks and add to large bowl.  Stir all of the contents to evenly combine mixture.

3.    Fill glass jar ¾ of the way full with the garlic, ginger, horseradish, peppers and lemon grass mixture.

4.    Pour apple cider vinegar over the above ingredients until it is filled almost to the top.  Leave about ½-1 inch space at the top of the jar.

5.     Place lid on the jar and shake.  The contents will settle, if more apple cider vinegar is needed, add more.
6.    Shake the Master Tonic/glass jar at least one time everyday.  If you think about it, shake it every time you pass by the jar.  Make sure to put some good intentions into it when you shake it.  Leave out on your counter for about 14 days (New Moon until Full Moon), preferably out of direct sunlight.
7.     Strain Master Tonic on the Full Moon.  Use cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer to strain contents.  Store in glass bottles, make sure to label and date bottles.

Note: ALL ingredients should be organic or at least grown with organic practices.  Other Master Tonic recipes use onion, but I omit it from my recipe.  Feel free to include it if onion is not a problem for you.

Storage: Store Master Tonic tincture in dark place like a cabinet or pantry.  It’s fine to store in a refrigerator too.  Tinctures do not spoil or deteriorate when stored properly and kept out of direct sunlight.

Dosage: Take 1-2 tablespoons per day as a preventative.  Gargle and swish tincture in your mouth, then swallow.  If you need to, chase it with a sip of a drink.  Make sure to break up the dosages, so your body is getting a boost at different times during the day.  Try taking 1 tablespoon in the morning and 1 tablespoon in the evening.  During illness, increase dosage.  Try taking at least 4 tablespoons per day, making sure to spread out the dosages throughout the day. Tinctures are wonderful because they absorb into your body immediately.

Serving Suggestions: Add a couple of tablespoons into bone broth, stock or soup for an extra kick and added nutrition.  Add 1-2 tablespoons into your favorite salad dressing mixture to add some heat and spice.  Use in marinades for meats and vegetables.  Add to sauces or gravies for extra heat, spice and nutrition.

Tip: Save the solids and store in the freezer.  Use the solids for spicy marinades.  Eat it fresh as a condiment on burgers or with some cheese as a snack.

Holistic Tips to Keep Your Family Healthy

It’s that time of year again, the end of summer is approaching and the cold and flu "season" is around the corner.  People are headed back-to-school, holidays are approaching and the commercial industry starts bombarding stores with processed candy and desserts.

Nutrition is the key to health.  When the season changes and people start consuming large quantities of sugar-laden foods, immune systems weaken and become overworked.

Boosting your immune system is important if you want to stay healthy.  A healthy immune system will lessen your chances of getting sick.  If you do get sick, the duration of illness will not last as long and you will recover quicker.

Now is the time to plan for the season change.

Essential Oils & Natural Cleaning Products - White Vinegar, Grapefruit Seed Extract, Lemons, Baking Soda

    Tips for Your Home

    • Change your filters every 1-2 months, especially when the season changes.  Replace w/ high quality filters, not the cheap ones that barely catch anything, you want filters that filter mold, viruses, dander, etc.
    • Clean ceiling fan blades.
    • Use natural/”green” cleaning products, make sure to read ingredient labels.
    • Use True HEPA air filtration portable units (not HEPA-Type).
    • Vacuum house at least once a week, every other day if possible, with a HEPA vacuum.
    • Add indoor house plants to the home to clean the air.
    • Use Nebulizer Diffusers w/ essential oils (like Thieves or Medieval essential oil) to clean the air, body will absorb the healing properties of the essential oils too.
    • Remove any commercial-grade scented candles or air fresheners from the home.
    • Open your windows as much as possible to allow fresh air into the home, outdoor air quality is almost always better than indoor air quality.

    Your Mind, Body & Spirit
    • Remember that your body believes what you tell it and it will act accordingly.  Talk to your body (seriously!) and tell it want you want to occur and/or thank it for getting your attention.  Be positive when talking to your body and be grateful for the messages it sends you.
    • Daily Self-talk – Flood your mind w/ positive thoughts, peace, joy, happiness and comfort.
    • Do your best to keep balance and harmony w/ all things.
    • End the day w/ positive messages to yourself.  If you have children, this is an excellent time to talk to them and give them positive messages to sleep with.  Tell them that tomorrow will be a happy day, tell them how grateful you are, tell them the things you love about them, tell them that they are happy, healthy, strong, loving and whole.  Say the same things to yourself too!
    • When you can, get outside and enjoy the fresh air.  If there is sun shining, make sure you enjoy it and soak up the vitamin D.  Be out in nature as much as possible.  Your body will thank you.
    • Get some form of exercise, our bodies are not meant to be sedentary.
    • Make sure to get plenty of rest.  If you do get sick, honor your body by resting and sleeping as much as you need to.

Nourish the mind, body and soul.
